Young workers, which really means anyone under the age of 18, have extra rights to protect them when they work.
These additional rights affect their working hours and rest hours, and it’s important to note that in England, until they’re 18 years old, school leavers should also be in some kind of education too. Under the age of 16 there may be a requirement to get a special permit to employ someone, and there are restrictions around when they can work, particularly during school terms.
There are minimum rates of pay for young workers, and you’re legally required to keep a record of the hours that they work for 2 years. It’s important to note that as with everyone else, young workers are protected by the Equality Act and as age is a protected characteristic, assumptions shouldn’t be made about what they can or can’t do because of their age.
